Introducing the exhibit
The Tagalog word ‘mahal’ translates into ‘love.’ It refers to that which is dear, but also means expensive. Perhaps Jacinto’s promise of fulfillment is also a costly one.
Mahal 3: Packing & Unpacking Balikbayan Box Flows is about the stories Filipinos tell through the gifts they send to friends and family. We displayed the contents of two balikbayan boxes in Vancouver, Canada in the YACTAC art gallery on June 8-9. The boxes were then sent to the KANTO Art Collective in Manila, Philippines where the recipients unpacked the boxes and received their items on September 13.
